FRANKLIN.017.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1850; renovated 1983. Exhibiting features of the late-Greek Revival and early-Italianate styles with its columned front portico, double-tiered side piazzas, and oversized closed gable, making a lower pitched roof, Whitney's house incorporates other eclectic trends of mid-19th century America. Although obscured by the shutters, the first- and second-story windows are framed by Egyptian Revival style architraves. In the conversion of the structure as a designer show house in 1983, extensive decorate paint schemes were discovered on the interior. The building housed Charleston's French consul, Paul Dejardin, in the 1970s and 1880s.
