KING.191.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1850. This 3-story gray brick building with a granite Gothic Revival storefront, consisting of an arched entablature supported by trefoil-shaped columns, was built by the furniture merchant William Enston in 1850 as the flagship for his stores. This English merchant who came to Charleston also built a major real estate and steamship empire. At his death in 1860, he left a remainder interest in his $1 million estate for the founding of the William Enston Home, built at 900 King Street. In 1887 the structure became the home of Phoenix Furniture, a company eventually managed by A.W. Litschgi of 136 Broad Street. Although the facade has been well preserved, the stone cornice was removed in recent years.
File contains description of physical appearance and statement of significance from an undated, unattributed Part I Certification application.
