Notes

Glass was broken during the late 1990's. Repaired by Susan Nash, 2002.

Notes

The picture was an engraving which had been mounted to the reverse side of a glass mat using varnish. The back of the picture had then been painted with heavy oil paint so that the color shone through the paper. There was gilding on the butterfly as well. The mat was gold leaf inner edge with gold leaf lettering below and the margins painted black. The picture was framed in a simple black painted frame. The back of the frame was filled with a broadside and pasteboard. The glass was very fragile and had been broken. The image broake clearnly along the glass fractures. The paper was extremely dark and brittle from having been varnished and from having been in contact with oil paint, which oxidizes paper. It was broken in many pieces following the breakage of the glass mat. The center of the picture was destroyed with the glass. It was firmly adhered to the glass pieces with the varnish, however. The oil medium was very thick, but in good condition. The varnish was very much darkened, making the picture difficult to view. The mount of glass was proken into many pieces and the center of the glass was pulverized. The wooden frame was in good condition. Damage Information: Mount of glass was broken into many pieces and the center of the glass was pulverized.

Notes

Scope of work: The pieces of paper were removed from the glass pieces using paint stripper having methylene chloride and toluene in it. The varnish was further removed from the front of the image using acetone and toluene. The pieves of the picture were reinforced with Hapanese paper an dmethyl cellulose adhesive adn the picture was given a backing using htis. The missing areas were filled with paper pulp made from kozo fiber, a a third backing was given. The losses were inpainted using Windor and Newton Watercolors and some Rembrandt acrylic colors. The broadside was washed and buffered with calcium hydroxide water which froms calcium carbonated in the paper fibers upon drying. It was dried, then inserted between two pieces of mylar into the back of the frame. A new glass mat was made by Veda and Bret Headley, Winchester, Virginia, using old glass, gold leaf, and black oil paint. The paper ws archivally hinged using Japanese paper/starch paste into a mat of buffered ragboard and reframed in a sealed package consisting of the glass, matted picture, and 5 mil Mylar D on the back, taped arond the edges with 3M 810 tape. Before and after treatment Agfachrome sildes and digital pictures were taken. Cost: 1850 Expected completion date: 2002-08-05
