MORRIS.013.1Scope and Content
Pre 1738, the property that consists of No.13 Morris Street was once part of a larger15 ¾ acre farm owned by Englishman William Elliott. Elliott gave the land that is now bounded by King, Radcliffe, Smith and Morris Streets in his will to his three sons William, Joseph and Thomas, under the agreement of a secret trust with a religious contingency. In 1739, Joseph Elliot left in his will his share of the property to the "Society of Christians, called General Baptists meeting and communing in the worship of God at the Meeting house of the Stono and Charleston." In 1787, the Society of Christians became extinct and the lands immediately fell into the hands of William Elliott of Accabee's heirs and executors. In 1812, the property was divided into 49 lots. In 1825, the land was given to William Elliot of Accabee's heirs, surviving daughter Ann Morris and Thomas Pinckney. Ann Morris died in 1849. In 1850, Thomas N. Gadsden purchased the lot of land known as Lot #9, 10 and part of 5. In 1852, Thomas N. Gadsden conveys a mortgage to Henry Oetjen and John B. Martin for the property. In 1853, Zions Evangelical Lutheran Church purchased and in 1866, the property was conveyed to the African Methodist Episcopal Church and its trustees. Later, the General Assembly of the State of Carolina declared the Wentworth Street Lutheran Church and the African Methodist Episcopal Church with Zions Evangelical Lutheran Church and Methodist Protestant Church were a body by "name and style of the Wentworth Street Lutheran Church," giving them ownership of all the real estate and land. In 1872, the African Methodist Episcopal Church was given the official title of the land, "with a church thereon," from The Wentworth Street Lutheran Church on Morris Street, becoming its own entity. (Lavelle report, 2011.)
