One of several sessions of the Architectural Forum, held as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Historic Charleston Foundation. Two presentations: "Preservation Follows Understanding: New Discoveries in Charleston Architecture" (Jonathan Poston, Director of Preservation, HCF). Traces the evolution of the scholarship of Charleston architecture and discusses his newly published book "The Buildings of Charleston." "Pivotal Moments in the Preservation of a City" (Charles Duell, President, Middleton Foundation). Discusses several pivotal periods in the development of historic preservation in Charleston: establishment of the Society for the Preservation of Old Dwellings (1920); adoption of the first historic zoning ordinance (1931); publication of This is Charleston and the establishment of Historic Charleston Foundation and its house tours (1940s); Francis Edmunds named Executive Director of HCF (1955); Charleston Hotel and "Three Sisters" demolished leads to an amendment of the zoning ordinance (1960s); Charleston's tricentennial year, the opening of the Mills House, National Trust conference, Feiss-Wright architectural study, 1974 preservation plan, etc. (early 1970s); election of Mayor Riley, expansion of the Old and Historic District, Drayton Hall becomes part of National Trust (late 1970s); future of Charleston Place resolved, full-time preservation officer hired by City (1983); Hurricane Hugo recovery, HCF takes over the Aiken-Rhett House and McLeod Plantation and purchases the Gibbes House and Mulberry Plantation, the Calhoun Street Corridor (1990s). 1 videodisc (DVD) : 96 min.
