History: descended in the William Algernon family of Rose Hill plantation, Charleston, SC.
11/10/04: This table is well balanced on a wide-spreading pedestal basewith rectangular base supporting four columns embellished with fluting and stylized leaf carving. At the center of the base rests a gilded, attenuated pineapple. The four reeded legs terminate in brass lions' paw feet on casters. The top is square when open with ovolo corners. The front apron has lion-head and ring brass mounts at each corner.
When not in use, it would have been typical to place the table, in its closed position, against a wall where it may have been used as a pier table. The ovolo corners of this example place it in the early nineteenth century.Collection

This table was examined in the closed position as visitors were present in the house.
The top of the table has significant staining. Gouges are apparent at the front center and at the rear back edge. There are surface scratches overall and tiny white accretions on the proper left. The proper right rear corner is broken off and chipping is apparent along the front edge. There are accretions in the reeding.
The lions' heads on either side of the apron show evidence of old brass paste polish.
The apron has veneer loss on the top edge at the front proper left with a dangerously loose piece adjacent. Another loss is at the corner of the proper left. Old chips are apparent along the bottom cockbeading.
The secondary wood under the top appears to have old worm damage on the proper right side. There is also a crack in the wood on the proper right ending in a chip. A new screw and washer have been used to secure the central support.
The base plinth shows veneer losses at the proper front right and the proper rear right corners as well as on the proper right side. There are horizontal cracks in the veneer across the front of the base, across the top and on the proper left side. A large chip appears along the bottom edge of the proper right side. The rear apron of the plinth appears to be in good condition.
The legs all have scratches and slight gouges along the bottom edges. The proper right front leg is slightly loose.
