The Historic City Faces its FutureDescription
One of several sessions of the Architectural Forum, held as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Historic Charleston Foundation.
Panel discussion moderated by Thomas Thornhill, Past President of HCF, with panelists Nancy Hawk (Civic Leader), Harold Koon (President, Mazyck-Wrqggborough Neighborhood Association), Michael Molony (Past President, Ansonborough Neighborhood Association), and Jeff Rosenblum (Chairman, Board of Architectural Review).
Presentations by panelists, followed by Q&A. Topics discussed include maintaining livability by keeping residential buildings residential, improving traffic conditions, and ensuring that buildings are made of high quality materials that will last for centuries (Hawk); improvements in Mazyck-Wraggborough and the challenges faced by all neighborhoods (Koon); the unique pressures on Ansonborough and efforts of the neighborhood association to address them (Molony); factors that affect future trends in architecture - growth, urban planning, and style (Rosenblum).
Q&A topics include the need for an accommodations survey; the hope for "first class" contemporary architecture, e.g., Union Pier; inclusion of College of Charleston historic preservation students in advocacy efforts; educating new home buyers from outside of Charleston in architecture and preservation; the need to assess appropriate height, scale, and mass of new architecture; the impact of tour buses versus pedestrian tourists.
Also includes anecdotes about Charleston during the 1930s-1960s, from its slum-like and "ghost town" conditions to the period of growth after WWII to its current successes.
