QUEEN.057.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1840; renovated ca. 1958. Functioning in the 19th century as the office of the veterinary surgeon Dr. Benjamin McInnes and in the 20th century as the offices of one of Charleston's pioneer urologists and heart surgeons, the younger Dr. Benjamin McInnes, this property remained in the hands of the McInnes family, who owned and operated the blacksmith's shop at 24 Chalmers Street, for nearly 100 years. A 2-story stuccoed brick structure with Italianate arches on the ground story and Craftsman period details on the second, the building was completely refashioned in the late 1950s to appear as a Colonial Revival style Charleston single house in its use as a branch bank; it adjoined a large bank parking lot that was constructed at that time with a splendid Charleston-style brick wall.
File contains FOHG house histories (1974, 1991, undated); two newspaper articles about the parking lot, with photographs (1957); building history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston and 2011 Tour Guide Training Manual; description from "Adaptive Use of Period Architecture: A Field Study" (HCF tour, 1965); photocopy of photograph (undated, unattributed); photocopy of architectural drawings and photos (Meadors, 2005); Rosen and Associates (engineers) inspection report (1994); photocopy of deed (Horlbeck to McInnes, 1873); Medical Society of South Carolina Resolution in memory of Dr. Benjamin McInnes.Collection
