Scope and Content

Constructed 1865; rehabilitated 1981. A bookseller completed this 3-story masonry single house (78 Queen Street) right after the Civil War on the site of a building lost in the fire of 1861. Most burned-over lots were not built on until long after the war, but O'Mara was perhaps one of the first to rebuild. He obtained a city loan to erect the two-story structure at 82 Queen Street in 1869 as an investment. Restored some years ago as a restaurant, it has a unique, inner wrought-iron gate with an egret motif. The restaurant has incorporated the neighboring stuccoed brick building at 84 Queen Street, built as an investment by William Ufferhardt, a German merchant, in 1876. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) File contains newspaper articles (including 1981 DYKYC); house history from Tour Guide Training Manual (2011); Rosen and Associates (engineers) inspection report (1992); graduate student report on the history of 82 and 84 Queen Street, which includes historical and chain-of-title research, maps, photos, and other supporting documentation including biographical information about Jonathan Jasper Wright (Christine Mathieson, 2009). No photos of 82-84 Queen Street on file. Image #2 in this record is from document in the Property File.
