Scope and Content

Constructed 1882; rehabilitated 2983. This functional wooden building with a brick front facade served a fledgling electrical company, organized in 1881, that failed to secure a contract with the city for electrical street illumination. The group went out of business and Charleston did not begin the electrification process until five years later. The structure's history was rediscovered during its rehabilitation in the early-1980s. File contains newspaper articles (1981, 1986 DYKYC, and 1983 article about zoning variance request); HCF's objections to variance request; Preservation Consultants position on plans to rehabilitate the building; correspondence and other documentation related to the Part I Certification application (1984); Preservation Consultants "Information Package" that includes historical information, maps, photographs, I.E.E.E. Milestone program, newspaper articles, Statement of Significance, etc.
