Scope and Content

The Old Roper Hospital was constructed between 1850-1852, designed by Edward C. Jones. This large Italianate building was funded in part by the bequest of Thomas Roper and was approximately doubled through appropriations by the City and the State. The earthquake of 1886 severely damaged its wings, which had to be removed. Only the central block survives in altered form as the Marlborough Apartments, 132-136 Queen Street and 140 Queen Street, constructed 1913 by Marlborough Realty on the surviving block of Roper Hospital. Although it had faded in fashion, the Queen Anne style was employed in the design and construction of these four 2-story wooden dwellings with double-tiered front piazzas. The main section of the hospital was divided into apartments and the residence of the realty company's owner. His descendants lived in the building until Hurricane Hugo damaged it so heavily that it was entirely demolished.
