General Notes

Note

Notes: By Marie Ferrara. Published in South Carolina Historical Magazine, vol. 104, no. 4, Oct. 2003. Includes bibliographical references. Accessed from JSTOR by Katherine Pemberton. New York Times account of the fire also in folder (Dec. 18, 1861). Charleston Gazette advertisement for Russell's warehouse, site where the fire originated (Aug. 1, 1797). Per Katherine Pemberton: "[The] 1861 fire started in the vicinity of Hassell and East Bay Streets at Russell's Sash and Blind company. I think most historians believe it was accidental; it was an industrial site so makes sense that a fire could start accidentally, although the story that was circulated early on by the owner of the business was that it was the work of slaves who were messing around the area."
