Two-part seminar:
Part 1: This lecture by Robert Leath and Susan Buck describes the preservation efforts used for the Aiken-Rhett House Museum. Leath explains a history of the Aiken Rhett, and preservation as a whole, and Buck explains the powers of paint analysis. Using the study of material culture and paint analysis, Leath and Buck are able to determine the social history and uses of various rooms within the house.
Part 2: This lecture by Maurie McInnis is part of the Aiken-Rhett family seminar series. McInnis builds on the history of the Aiken-Rhett home introduced by Robert Leath from part 1 of the series. McInnis uses the research conducted by Historic Charleston Foundation to further understand the house’s exterior and interior design, as well as the social function it served for the Aiken-Rhett family.
