RUTLEDGE.042.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1859. Thomas O'Brien, a grocer and liquor dealer, constructed this large-scale Charleston single house a few years after purchasing the lot in 1856. A deep entablature with large modillions frames the front end pediment. The first floor windows, as well as the third story Palladian window, follow the Italianate style of architecture. Although the present piazza door screen is a Colonial Revival replacement, the piazza appears to be original, with large fluted Doric columns on the first floor and slightly smaller columns of the same order on the second tier. O'Brien also built the house next door at 44 Rutledge Avenue. Somewhat simpler in detail, the piazza retains its 19th century door screen with acanthus leaf console brackets supporting a dentiled entablature. (The Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains FOHG house history (undated); Rosen and Associates (engineers) report on floor measurements, with drawings) (2009) and photocopies of photographs showing cracks in walls, etc., presumably from Rosen and Associates files.Collection
