Three seminars from a four-part series hosted by Historic Charleston Foundation on March 7, 1987: Part 1: "Introduction to Stone Carving and Repair." Guest speaker Dean Korban discusses his work as a mason and stone cutter and describes the composition of various types of stone, treatments, and common problems that come with stone repair and restoration. Part 2: "In Search of Restoration Philosophy." Guest speaker Ali Miri discusses his personal philosophy about the conservation and restoration of stone, as well as the importance of preserving history. Part 3: "The Stone Carver's Art in Colonial Charleston." Jonathan Poston describes the evolution of 18th century stone carving ornamentation in Charleston, focusing on funerary motifs in stone ornament and sculpture found on grave markers, churches, and buildings. A fourth part was recorded; however, the recording is defective (no sound). Entitled "Restoration Techniques for Funeral Monuments" presented by Lynn Strangstad and "Demonstration on Paint Removal" presented by James Dietrich. Discarded. Part 1: 1 DVD (38 min.)
