RUTLEDGE.065.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1840. The builder of this 3½ story, side-hall-plan house came to Charleston from New England and rose to be one of the leading merchants in the city. Active in promoting industrialism and becoming one of the earliest manufacturers of cotton goods in the state, James Taylor also helped found the Carolina Art Association. The simple Greek Revival dwelling, still retaining its early stucco coating, was embellished with pressed metal detailing in the late-19th century, including the semicircular window heads and the pedimented door overhang supported by metal brackets. A triple-tiered piazza with three levels of Tuscan columns shades the south elevation of the house, which at the time of construction overlooked Colonial Lake. This house, like the residence Taylor constructed next door in 1850 at 67 Rutledge Avenue, remained in the hands of Taylor descendants until 1968.
