SAVAGE.046-48.1Description
B&W photograph of 46 Savage Street and 48 Savage Street (Joseph Thompson Houses), street (front) elevation (R to L). Two copies of photograph in sleeve.
Joseph Thompson constructed these nearly identical two-story single houses by 1880. Both buildings retain their wide faces, surmounted by closed gables with small louvered attic openings. The piazza at 46 Savage is screened from the street by a bracketed door architrave with a pedimented hood and a rectangular glass transom with clipped corners. From an alteration common to Charleston houses during the early 20th century, the piazza door screen at 48 Savage Street is missing, as is the raised wooden decking of the first floor of the piazza. The columns of this porch have been altered with the addition of nine-course brick pedestals, and they now rest on a brick paved terrace. (Buildings of Charleston, p. 324.)Collection
