RUTLEDGE.089.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1852. Elizabeth Smith White inherited a portion of this property from her father's estate in 1840, and through partition and subsequent purchase, she and her husband created two building lots at Rutledge Avenue and Wentworth Street. By 1852 White built 89 Rutledge Avenue on the corner as a 2½ story stuccoed brick Charleston single house with stone lintels and sills on the principal windows of the front elevation, and topped by a pilaster gable with a tripartite window. The present loggia entry and piazza are later additions. An early-20th century addition to the rear dependency created a substantial additional unit accessed from Montagu Street. Shortly after constructing this residence for himself, White built a similar masonry Charleston single house with a corbeled brick gable end at 87 Rutledge Avenue. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
