Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1850. A giant order Temple of the Winds portico commands the Montagu Street elevation of one of Charleston's most elaborate antebellum houses. Serving as an interesting foil to the similarly oriented Mikell house across the street, this dwelling was built by Edward L. Trenholm. Trenholm spent some years in England as the managing partner of Fraser, Trenholm and Company. Reflecting the transition between Greek Revival and Italianate influences in Charleston, a pedimented doorway on the Rutledge Avenue side leads to a stair hall rising to the principal entertaining floor, which has large, double drawing rooms. The window heads on the east side become more exuberant on the south portico side with broken pediments and central shell motifs supported by brackets. 93 Rutledge Avenue has been made into several apartments, with a ground-floor office. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) File contains FOHG house histories (undated, 1965 [Landmarks in Use], 2000); brief historical research note by Samuel G. Stoney (1965).
