RUTLEDGE.094.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1853-54; restored 1960s, 1980s. One of the most visually imposing houses in Charleston constructed before the Civil War, the Isaac Jenkins Mikell house more closely resembles an Italian villa than a Charleston house. In July 1853 Mikell purchased lots 97 and 98 in Harleston Village for $13,300. Nearly a year later he sold half of that land to Edward H. Lane for a bond of $12,000. It is assumed that Mikell began construction on his house located on lot 98 shortly after its purchase in 1853. The house appears much as it did then, with a Minton-tiled portico supported by Corinthian column capitals carved from cypress and ornamented by rams' heads. Mikell was one of several millionaire Sea Island cotton planters from Edisto Island. This town house is believed to have been built for Mary Martha Pope, his third wife. The house passed through a series of owners until 1934, when it was listed as vacant. In 1935 the house was sold to the Charleston Free Library, and it began 25 years of public service. It was saved and restored as a residence in the 1960s by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Woodward. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
