RUTLEDGE.179.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1876. Abrahams and Seyle, architects. The well-to-do merchant Edmonds Brown began construction of this massive, antebellum style brick house a decade after the end of the Civil War. Following the side-hall plan, with double-tiered piazzas supporting Tuscan columns, the house has remained a single family residence with little alteration. Completed by the prosperous grocer George Wagener, the house descended to Wagener's daughter and her Virginia-born husband, Dr. Harrison Randolph, the president of the College of Charleston in its important early 20th century years.
