Scope and Content

Constructed 1850; restored after 1918. Restoration of the buildings that line St. Michael's Alley began prior to World War I and were among the city's earliest rehabilitation efforts. Susan Pringle Frost, a preservation pioneer and cofounder of the Preservation Society of Charleston, purchased several houses along the alley then described by the Post and Courier as a "slum." George Dingle, a tradesman, built this small 2-story, gabled roof dwelling as a tenement in the mid-19th century almost contemporaneously with the similarly fenestrated house next door at 4 St. Michael's Alley. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement). Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property; appraisal (2019); property research report including narrative, chain-of-title, timeline, maps, etc. (Lavelle, 2018); FOHG garden history with hand-drawn landscape plan (1979); historical/chain-of-title research notes; photocopy of plat (undated); photocopy of 1813 deed and plat (Winstonley to Downie); photocopy of 1799 plat; newspaper article (Susan Pringle Frost, date not indicated); correspondence (2 letters) related plans for the construction of a garden building (2001); 1886 Earthquake damage assessment; Hurricane Hugo damage assessment (PDF only). Files will eventually contain additional documentation such as correspondence related to the easement; annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; correspondence related to the management of the property; correspondence and other documentation related to the sale of the property; historical research; etc.
