STPHILIP.035.1Scope and Content
Built as a public school in 1856 on St. Philip Street near George Street. Designed by W. Jefferson Bennett, an ardent champion of public education, and was modeled somewhat after public schools in New York City. The building was remodeled in 1910, 1922, and 1945. On the completion of Memminger Elementary School on August 1, 1954, Bennett and Crafts schools were merged and moved to the new building. The College of Charleston bought Bennett School and razed it in 1959. (Source: DYKYC)
