Interview of Thomasena Stokes-Marshall. Mrs. Stokes-Marshall was born in the African-American settlement of Snowden Community in what is now Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. At the age of three she moved with her family to New York City. The family stayed in NYC but frequently visited family members in the Snowden Community. Mrs. Stokes-Marshall talks about her childhood visits to South Carolina and her education, upbringing, and careers in policing and community organizing in New York. She moved back to her hometown in 1993 and relates her experiences with re-learning the area, learning about the history and culture of the Gullah-Geechee community, and becoming involved in the community. She recounts how she became interested in running for political office to affect improve the lives of her neighbors. Elected to Mt. Pleasant Town Council in 1998, she was the first African American woman to hold that position, and she served Town Council for 17 years. In 2004 she formed the Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival. She talks about the festival and her numerous other community projects including the Thomasena Stokes-Marshall Senior Center and the African American Historic Settlements Commission. Mrs. Stokes-Marshall describes her interest in the full spectrum of Gullah-Geechee history and culture and how volunteerism is a key factor in activating the community.
