9-15 Savage Street (Laura Martelle Houses)Entry/Object ID
SAVAGE.009-015.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1894-1898. Well-detailed wood parapets with curvilinear features surmount these 2-story dwellings constructed by Miss Laura Martelle, who lived at 19 Limehouse Street in the late-1890s. While only 9, 11, and 13 Savage Street still have their curvilinear window hoods, all of the houses retain their bracketed cornices and other features in the Italianate style. The original piazza at 15 Savage Street has been replaced with a ponderous contemporary variant, but the Queen Anne style turned columns with jigsaw-cut brackets and spindle-work balustrades remain in the three southernmost examples.
File contains FOHG House History for 9 Savage (1998); Rosen and Associates (engineers) Hurricane Hugo Damage inspection report for 9 Savage Street (1989); Rosen and Associates (engineers) Hurricane Hugo Damage inspection report for 15 Savage Street (1989).
