Scope and Content

Named for Benjamin Smith, Speaker of the Commons House of Assembly, Smith Street was one of the streets of Harleston laid out in 1770. Until 1849, Smith Street terminated at Beaufain Street. In July 1849, the Committee on City Lands had the street extended south through the marsh lands to Queen Street. (Source: Tour Guide Training Manual, 2011) File contains the following scant chain-of-title research notes (HCF staff) for 39 Smith Street, 54 Smith Street, 84 Smith Street, 129-132 Smith Street; photocopy of photograph of 74 Smith Street (date and source not indicated).
