Yet, what is often omitted from the history books is the story of the enslaved people, their trials, tribulations and contributions to one of America’s most beloved cities. A panel featuring former College of Charleston Professor Emeritus Bernard Powers, PhD and Acting Director of the International African American Museum; Joe McGill, founder of The Slave Dwelling Project and Shawn Halifax, head of public history at Charleston Country Parks and Recreation Commission, discuss how Charleston’s history became “white-washed,” and the current efforts to balance the narrative going forward.
