Perspectives on the Narrative: Telling a More Complete History of CharlestonEntry/Object ID
2021.002.2Description
Charleston has long been lauded for its history, charm and beauty. Yet, what is often omitted from the history books is the story of the enslaved people, their trials, tribulations and contributions to one of America’s most beloved cities. A panel featuring former College of Charleston Professor Emeritus Bernard Powers, PhD and Acting Director of the International African American Museum; Joe McGill, founder of The Slave Dwelling Project and Shawn Halifax, head of public history at Charleston Country Parks and Recreation Commission, discuss how Charleston’s history became “white-washed,” and the current efforts to balance the narrative going forward. Moderated by historian Dr. Nic Butler from The
Charleston County Public Library. Presented at the Aiken-Rhett House on Dec. 10, 2020.
