89 Smith Street (Bennett-Jones House)Entry/Object ID
SMITH.089.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1840; renovated ca. 1850; rehabilitated 1989. By 1840, either Gov. Thomas Bennett Jr. or his son W. Jefferson Bennett, built this 2-story Greek Revival house overlooking the marshes and family mill pond. Occupied in the 1850s by the noted architect Edward C. Jones, the house was renovated to relate to Smith Street with a Doric-columned front portico decorated with interesting reverse console brackets that flank the front doorway. Polygonal bay windows on the north and south ends feature a mix of Gothic, Roman, and Egyptian detailing. These last features create curious alcoves with Gothic plaster decoration in the principal first-floor rooms.
File contains narrative history "The W. Jefferson Bennett House, 89 Smith Street: a History" by Robert P. Stockton; newspaper article ("designer house," 4/8/1989); floor plan (undated, unattributed); realtor's information sheet (includes house history and plat); Rosen and Associates inspection report on 89½ Smith Street (2002).Collection
