SMITH.091.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1808; renovated 1905; rehabilitated 1980s. Christian Henry Faber, a merchant of German extraction on King Street, leased a lot on Calhoun Street in 1808 to Nathaniel G. Maxwell. Maxwell built the present dwelling in the Federal style with weatherboarding, a low pitched hipped roof, and five bays on each elevation with nine-over-nine sash windows. Hewn and sash-sawn framing evidences the early character of the building. Moved from Calhoun Street to the present site, the house became a rental duplex in 1905 and continues to house tenants. The front piazza was later rebuilt, while the rear porch retains its Tuscan columns.
