2021.002.10Description
Interview of Robert H. Hortman, Plantation Manager at Medway.
This interview focuses on the management and protection of Medway Plantation from the perspective of Bob Hortman, who has been property manager at the site since February 18, 1978 (43 years). Mr. Hortman discusses how he started out at Medway and how the property has changed his life. Mr. Hortman's predecessor, Bill Baldwin, was mentioned, who worked on the site for 42 years before Mr. Hortman. Other staff at the property were also mentioned, including Willie Washington, Sam Washington (Willie's son), and Doris Walters (office manager). Mr. Hortman describes life as a plantation manager, maintenance requirements of the historic structures, and the landscape. Hurricane Hugo was a major event at the property and also a turning point. Substantial amounts of long-leaf and loblolly pine were destroyed and the plan for the Audubon Society to acquire the property after Gertrude Legendre's ownership fell through. Mrs. Legendre and Mr. Hortman keenly felt the vulnerability of the property to development and decided to donate easements to HCF and Ducks Unlimited, to protect the property in perpetuity.
Gertrude Legendre was described fondly. Mr. Hortman worked with her for 22 years, starting when he was 28 years old.
The importance of preserving Medway through the easements was also articulately described.
Date of interview: June 2,2021. Interviewed by April Wood (HCF) at Medway Plantation.
