2021.002.12Description
Interview of Sam Washington, longtime chauffer and caretaker at Medway.
Interview with Sam Washington who has worked at Medway Plantation since he was 17 years old. (Mr. Washington is 72 years old at the time of the interview.) Mr. Washington worked as Mrs. Legendre's chauffeur up until her death in 2000. He continues to work on the property for the current owners. Mr. Washington shared stories about his experiences working on the property over the years. He recalled ghost sightings, elaborate parties held at Medway by Mrs. Legendre (one included an elephant), and the complicated process of picking up guests who traveled by train, were dropped off where the train crosses the Medway Plantation driveway, and transported by Jeep to the property. Mr. Washington spoke briefly of Sam Stoney, who sold Medway to the Legendres with the stipulation that staff was retained. Mr. Washington had a very close and dedicated relationship with his employer, Mrs. Legendre, which was most clear when Mr. Washington recounted a touching moment of genuine affection at Mrs. Legendre's death bed. A final note in the interview is how much Medway, the place, leaves an impression on people. Mr. Washington observed that Medway has now come in full circle in terms of use and vibrancy because the current owners are similar to Mrs. Legendre, even down to their choice in furniture.
Date of interview: June 10,2021. Interviewed by April Wood (HCF) at Medway Plantation.
