ALEXANDER.GEN.6a-bDescription
Two B&W photographs of 83 Alexander Street (Phillip Schnepf House) and 85 Alexander Street.
a: 83 Alexander Street and 85 Alexander Street (R to L), front elevation.
b: Door/doorway to 83 Alexander Street.
83 Alexander Street: Constructed 1881-82. An earlier house on this site owned by Benjamin Lee burned in the evacuation fire of 1865. A German tradesman built a traditional two-and-a-half-story Charleston single house on this site shortly after 1880. An Italianate style hood caps the piazza screen on the front of Tuscan-columned piazzas. With the exception of the screen and the two-over-two windows, the dwelling, with its closed gable and three dormers, continues in the Greek Revival style of single house construction.
85 Alexander Street: A nearly identical single house with six-over-six windows and Greek Revival piazza door surround survives next door at 85 Alexander Street. John R. Pickney, a freedman, erected this house between 1882 and 1885.Collection
