SMITH.112.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1884-86. Dr. Luden acquired a large tract in the mid-1880s from the Benthem estate. Shortly thereafter he built this house and its neighbors at 114 and 116 Smith Street in typical Charleston form. These three dwellings of the side-hall plan have front doorways with Italianate bracketed overhangs, side piazzas, front end gables, and Italianate window surrounds. In the 1880s the Paragon Building Association further subdivided these properties with other plots and created Murphy's Court, a complex of small Charleston single houses with side, one-story piazzas.
