SMITH.156.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1870. Built for Dr. Thomas E. Miller, this Charleston single house reflects the beginning of the transition from Greek Revival to Italianate architecture that occurred in the early-1870s. Dr. Miller was one of the foremost African American leaders in Reconstruction South Carolina. A member of the fifty-first U.S. Congress, he was the founder and first president of South Carolina State College. The house remained in the Miller family until 1950.
