SOCIETY.033.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1915; rehabilitated early 1980s. This wooden building (and 29 Society Street / 31 Society Street), constructed originally as a duplex, stands on the site of the rear yard of the Thomas Heyward House. Heyward had constructed his substantial house in 1788 with a large 2-story Tuscan portico. After the house was demolished, prior to World War I, the property was subdivided and the three tenement houses were built on the site. The surviving door surrounds, bay windows, and wood detailing are characteristic of the late-Queen Anne/Victorian style, already out of date when the dwellings were completed and indicative of the Ansonborough neighborhood's changing demographics in the early-20th century
Three files contain documentation of both the 1983 easement (extinguished in 2004) and the 2004 easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property.
