SOCIETY.036.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1840. A prosperous commission merchant built this exceptional 2-story Greek Revival house in 1840 utilizing the high basement of the previous dwelling on the site that had been destroyed in the 1838 fire. Henry Street doubled the size of the house in 1845 by adding rooms and changing the plan from a single house to a double house. Double parlors open off each other on the east side of the first-floor hall, while a dining room and rear room mark the other side. While such a front-facing Greek Revival house is rare in the strict urban confines of Ansonborough, the Street House has some similarities in its placement and scope of decoration to 64 Hasell Street.
Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence; Part I certification (National Register); IRS form 8283; annual inspection report (2007); house description from City of Charleston Tour Guide Training Manual (2011); newspaper article (1970 DYKYC).
Files will eventually contain additional annual inspection reports as well as requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; etc.
See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement). No inspection photographs on file (see Easement Manager's digital files).Collection
