Scope and Content

Constructed 1850; restored and rehabilitated 1961, 1980s. Juliana Dupre built the two stucco brick single houses at 40 and 42 Society Street in 1850 and 1854 respectively. The house at 40 Society Street lacks the expansive side lot of the westernmost house. The two differ because of the flat roof of 40 Society Street and the gable roof end of 42 Society Street. In a recent restoration, it was discovered that the house at 40 Society Street is actually built within the first-floor walls of the original house destroyed in the fire of 1838. The house, when rebuilt, was lengthened by nine feet, necessitating the recentering of all fireplaces and chimneys and the main stairwell. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Two files contain documentation of the covenant on the property; correspondence and other documentation related to the sale of the property; correspondence and other documentation related to the management of the property (including the repairs done under HCF's ownership); documentation of HCF's purchase of the property; annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; Rosen and Associates inspection report (2006); FOHG house histories ("old," 1993, 2008); FOHG garden history (2008); magazine article (1995); house history (realtor?, n.d.); archaeological report "Management Summary: Test Excavations at 40 Society Street" by Martha Zierden (1990). See Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography.
