SOCIETY.042.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1854; restored and rehabilitated 1961. Juliana Dupre built the two stucco brick single houses at 40 and 42 Society Street in 1850 and 1854 respectively. The house at 40 Society Street lacks the expansive side lot of the westernmost house. The two differ because of the flat roof of 40 Society Street and the gable roof end of 42 Society Street. Mr. and Mrs. J. Blake Middleton bought the dwelling at 42 Society Street in 1961. It was one of the first houses to be rehabilitated in Ansonborough. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
Two files contain original legal documentation of the covenant on the property; annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; correspondence and other documentation related to the management of the property (including the repairs done under HCF's ownership); documentation of HCF's purchase of the property; FOHG house histories (undated [early 1960s], 1963, 1969, 1976, 2008); garden history and sketch (undated, unattributed); newspaper articles; copy of HCF easement information card (TMS number, year of construction, significant resident(s), deed research, deed restrictions, measurements, and tax information).
