SOCIETY.052.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1840-41. The James M. Stocker House is characterized by a flat roof and scored stucco facade and retains much of its original detailing, including its simple Greek Revival door surround. Stocker, a merchant, bought the lot in 1840 and probably began construction of the single house immediately, as his mortgage to the Bank of the State of South Carolina required that funds for construction be expended within a year. In 1847 the property was conveyed in trust for Louisa Lord, the wife of Stocker's business partner, Samuel Lord. The Lords lived in this residence for the next several decades. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence; Part I certification (National Register); correspondence related to the management of the property; newspaper article (ca. 1970 DYKYC); annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; correspondence related to the management of the property (including granting of conceptual approval).
See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement). No inspection photographs on file (see Easement Manager's digital files).Collection
