Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1851. William McElheran rebuilt on this site after the fire and sold the dwelling with its appurtenances to James McClary, a blacksmith. McClary then lived at 24 Wentworth Street and apparently used this house as an investment. 57 Society Street is a three-story Charleston single house similar to 59 Society Street, another of the several dwellings in this area constructed by Jonah M. Venning as tenements after the fire of 1838. File contains FOHG house histories (1990, 2004).
