Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1843. This 3-story brick building was constructed by Marx E. Cohen, an Ashley River planter, after he purchased the vacant site in 1843. Born in Charleston in 1808, Cohen was a son of the prominent merchant and philanthropist, Mordecai Cohen, and was educated at the University of Glasgow. He married Armida Harby, youngest daughter of Isaac Harby, who in 1824 founded the Reformed Society of Israelites, the nation's first organization for Reform Judaism.
