28 South Battery (George S. Cook House)Entry/Object ID
SBATTERY.028.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1860. George S. Cook, the noted 19th century
photographer, built this stuccoed brick villa as his home. Cook's unforgettable photos of Charleston in the aftermath of the 1886 earthquake are in the collection of the Valentine Museum in Richmond. The house has an arcaded piazza on the second story similar to that of 26 South Battery but, following more the style of the picturesque movement, it features double arcaded window and balcony projecting from the gable roof. (BOC and Tour Guide Training Manual)
File contains newspaper article (1978 DYKYC); realtor sales brochure illustrated with photographs and maps (2002); early plat showing 28-32 South Battery (undated, Plat 7041).Collection
