30 South Battery (James E. Spear House)Entry/Object ID
SBATTERY.030.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1860. Although built at the same time as its eastern neighbor and bearing details of the Italianate style, particularly in its arched front doorway, Spear's house follows a more conservative Charleston Greek Revival pattern with its squared masonry columns, supporting a Tuscan-column second story portico and surmounting balustrade. French windows on each floor of the front elevation give access to these outdoor spaces. Spear's property had formerly been a part of the adjoining Col. John Ashe House site and had been inherited by Ashe's daughter Harriett. Spear's house was apparently the first to be constructed on the site.
Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); annual inspection reports; FOHG house history (undated/1980s?); newspaper article (including DYKYC, Nov. 7, year not indicated); historical/chain-of-title research information (Sarah Fick, 2003); photocopies of plats, maps, and deeds.
See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement). No inspection photographs on file (see Easement Manager's digital files).
