47 South Battery (Henry Cheves House)Entry/Object ID
SBATTERY.047.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1886-87. Before the earthquake of 1886, Henry Cheves purchased this lot, which was adjacent to numerous wharves and docking facilities, with a deed that prohibited him from putting up any commercial concerns except "a private wharf or bathhouse." This dwelling was probably built to face the Ashley River. It has Italianate style front cross gables and a later Colonial Revival style piazza on the South Battery elevation. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
