Scope and Content

51 South Battery was constructed ca. 1795. Though built in the Federal period as a 2½ story single house on a raised masonry foundation with its piazzas facing the harbor, this house went through numerous 19th and 20th century alterations. In the 1940s and 1950s Mrs. James Wilkinson operated an inn here, as well as a beloved local kindergarten. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) 51½ South Battery was constructed ca. late 1900s, possibly serving as a warehouse for the marine trade. (FOHG House History.)
