84 South Battery (Harriett Porcher Simons House)Entry/Object ID
SBATTERY.084.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1924. Albert Simons designed this house for his wife and family about a decade after his graduation from the University of Pennsylvania School of Architecture. His wife, Harriett Simons founded the League of Women voters in South Carolina. Although the front facade of the house appears to follow a traditional Charleston single house plan, a side-facing T provides an entry porch and alters the essential single house form. The brickwork, shutters with cut-out upper squares, and window details demonstrate a subtle Arts and Crafts influence on Simons's design.
