95 South Battery (Matthew Barkley House)Entry/Object ID
SBATTERY.095.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1914. The Barkley House remains the most imposing of the Neoclassical Revival style houses built in early 20th century Charleston. Its wooden facade, semicircular entry portico, large sash windows and shutters, and hipped roof with four massive chimneys seem more reminiscent of New England Federal houses. This impression was more pronounced when the building retained its front wooden fence, recently replaced with a modern iron fence set on a mottled brick coping.
