Support: The supports had surface dirt. The paper was oxidized, brittle and extremely discolored from aging. There were water stains on the verso of "Winter" which may correspond to a previous restoration attempt to bleach out this area. The surface is very deteriorated and covered with pastel. The edges had been trimmed and were reinforced on both sides using a laid Japanese paper. They were dark brown from oxidation or previous contact with acidic materials.
Medium: The watercolor had been damaged by exposure to light and possibly also be a previous restoration. The reds were orange, the greens were bluish, and all the other colors were thin. Some colors, like the dark blue of dresses, may have been recolored. The sky had been retouched in all the prints.
Mounts: the mounts were new and of good quality.Conservation
Notes
Scope of work: Treatment
Cleaning/Washing/Buffering: The surfaces were drycleaned with soft, kneadable eraser. The paper was washed in alkaline tap water to remove acids and stains. This removed the brown paper around the edges. The paper was aqueously buffered with a solution of diluted saturated calcium hydroxide water. Upon drying, calcium carbonate is formed in the paper fibers to buffer against future acid formation. This increases the life of the paper.
The reverse side was given a light-bleaching under fluorescent lights with 3% hydrogen peroxide added. Extra attention was paid to lightening the darker edges from the back. The front or colored side was not bleached.
Cosmetic/Repairs/Backing: The papers were given a reinforcing backing of Japanese paper/starch paste, and stretch-dried to flatten them. The losses were inpainted using watercolors. The prints were extensively recolored using Windsor & Newton watercolors with the remains of old coloring used as the guide.
Final Presentation: The papers were archivally hinged using Japanese paper/starch paste into the existing mat of buffered ragboard. They were shipped directly to the framer.
Photographs: Before and after treatment digital photos were taken. Slides taken of After treatment.
