Scope and Content

Spring Street today is called by a variety of names, including the Septima Clark Freeway, S.C. Hwy. 17, and the Crosstown. It stretches across the peninsula from the Cooper to the Ashley rivers and generally distinguishes The Neck from “downtown.” It is notorious for bringing Charleston commuters to a standstill, as it tends to flood heavily when it rains. File contains newspaper article about 125 Spring Street; photocopy of brochure for service station at 129 Spring Street, southwest corner of Ashley Avenue and Spring Street (date, source not indicated); photocopies of Spring Street photographic streetscapes and individual buildings,* submitted in support of a BAR application for 106 Spring Street in 2005 (no further information on file); letter to the editor with brief history of 198 Spring Street (with photograph); newspaper article about the James Hotel at the corner of Spring and Hagood Streets, with photograph (1989); newspaper article about gas station to be constructed on site of 127 Spring Street (DYKYC 1936); historical research reports for 107 Spring. 133 Spring (Joseph and Mary Whilden House), and 168 Spring (Kevin Eberle); report "114 Spring Street Briefing Book" describing the project summary, neighborhood, development overview, etc. (JJR Development, 7/23/2019); house history for 48 Spring Street (Lavelle, May 2015); historical research report for 93 Spring Street, the Nagara Engine Co. Firehouse (Eberle, 2021). *Photos of 97 Spring Street, 91 Spring Street, 234 Rutledge Avenue, 235 Rutledge Avenue, 102 Spring Street, 114 Spring Street, and 219 Rutledge Avenue. See SPRING.092.1 for report "92 Spring Street & 107 Spring Street Briefing Book" describing the project summary, neighborhood, development overview, and zoning (JJR Development, 9/19/2016).
