7 State Street (Union Insurance Company Building)Entry/Object ID
STATE.007.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1811-19. This temple-form building of Classical Revival style survives as one of Charleston's earliest office buildings. The state of South Carolina chartered the Union Insurance Company to write marine and fire insurance locally and elsewhere and to make loans. The company's headquarters moved to this location during the second decade of the 19th century. Possessing its own fire engine and band of firefighters, the company was obligated to fight fires on the premises as certified by the cast-iron seals on the building. A large-scale version of the seal remains, centered in the tympanum of the front pediment. Fine Tuscan-order pilasters and belt coursing also ornament the front facade of 7 State Street.
